The American University Kogod School of Business and Cars.com each ranked vehicles based on how American-made they were. The studies found that GM produces the most American-made models in the automotive industry, helping to bring more jobs to the U.S. and boost our economy.
The American University Kogod School of Business evaluated models in its Made in America Auto Index. It specifically looked at the final assembly location and key components’ production. GM had 10 models make the index’s top 25 list for 2020, which is more than any other automaker. GM also had the top ranking for total domestic content in 2020.
Cars.com rated 91 vehicles in its American-Made Index for 2020. It took into consideration the final assembly location, percentage of Canadian and U.S. parts, U.S. manufacturing employees compared to each automaker’s footprint, and country of origin for available transmissions and engines. Once again, GM had the most models make the list, coming with nine of the top 25 vehicles. The Chevrolet Corvette earned the eighth spot overall, making it the highest-ranked GM model.
In the U.S. alone, GM has invested over $27 billion since 2009. Since 2010, GM has been responsible for more than $1 of every $4 that U.S. automakers have invested in the U.S., according to the Center for Automotive Research.

The new 2021 Colorado and Canyon are being offered with a 2.8-liter inline four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. This is a very popular engine worldwide. The pickups also feature non-diesel options including the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 LGZ and the 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder LCV. Production was halted in the spring by the COVID-19 pandemic, but everything is now back on schedule for the fall.
Taking Orders for US-Built Trucks
Despite pandemic-related production delays, customers are now able to order a diesel-powered 2021 Colorado and Canyon. Orders for customers opened on July 15 and production began in late June 26 at GM’s Wentzville plant in Missouri. These diesel pickups will be the first U.S.-built GM vehicles made for the 2021 model year.
Changes are planned for both the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon in future generations. A third generation of the trucks is planned to be available for the 2023 model year.
